The islands boost not only an impressive underwater scenery by corals but also by marine life. Hundreds of different and rare species find shelter in the beautiful coral reefs of the Similan and Surin Islands. From ghost pipe fishes till harlequin shrimps, from white tip sharks to manta rays and the impressive whale sharks.
But the diving in the Andaman Sea is not only limited by the Similan and Surin Islands. Phuket got some very good dive sites too. At the south point of Phuket, you can find Raya Island. Famous for its underwater world. Excellent place for diving. More south the are a couple of very interesting dive sites with beautiful colorful coral reefs and the dive site Hin Bida famous for the leopard sharks.
Up north from Khaolak, there are some very interesting dive opportunities. Like diving in Myanmar in the Mergui Archipelago. You can book a trip from Khaolak, but the border town of Ranong (200 km from Khaolak) offers some dive centers who are specialized in dive trips to Myanmar. Diving in Myanmar increased in popularity. The spectacular dive sites and marine life are yet to be discovered.
The best time for diving in the Andaman Sea is from half October till half April. Best visibility and crystal clear waters. Diving at the Similan and Surin Islands can only be done in this period as the Marine National Park is closed for the other half of the year. Also the sea is to choppy to go out. If you still want to dive in the off-season period from May till October you can got to Phuket or the Phi Phi islands.

As said before, Khaolak is the point to start your dive tour at the Similan Islands. Khaolak offers a great number of dive centers offering all major courses with different dive organizations like PADI, SSI, CMAS, etc. You can go on day trip tours by speedboat or you can choose to go on a Liveaboard dive safari. 3 to 5 days on a (luxury) boat cruising the Similan and Surin Marine National Park Islands and diving at all the major dive sites.
